Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these medications must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
