Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
