Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the prestigious trophy on fourteen different occasions.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable triumph in the showdown featuring the French league winners and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side struck two times late to take a surprise lead. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital leveler in the dying seconds to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and the young talent all scored successfully for PSG to seal a 4-1 shootout win.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
